How to Protect Your Teeth

Finding a Dentist to Meet the Needs of Your Family

When you have a large family, finding one dentist for everybody can be difficult. For example, if you have young children, they might be frightened by the prospect of going to the dentist. And what do you do if you or your older children have a hard time handling pain? There are dentists who cater to different needs, and sometimes the quest for proper dental care requires finding different dentists for different people in your family.

A Dentist for Young Children

A dentist's office tends to be a sterile place, and young children tend to be curious, active, and—when trapped in an enclosed area for extended periods of time—mischievous. When sitting in the average dental office, you might find that your children are literally climbing up the walls. Everything in a children's dentist office should be designed with small children in mind. You should find plenty of toys in the waiting area, a TV situated near each examination room, and maybe even video games for children to play while they are waiting in the chair. Taking your children to a dentist who caters to their needs should help your children to learn to love going to the dentist's office.

The Dental Spa

Does the whine of a dental drill fill you or your older children with dread? If you find that you put off going to the dentist because even the thought of going to the dentist leads you to an anxiety attack, then you should consider going to sedation dentist or to a dental spa. A sedation dentist will allow you to take laughing gas during your whole visit. At a dental spa, you might still have the option to be put under, but you should also find sound-canceling headphones to mask the sound of the dental drill, massage treatments to help you relax, and/or entertainment options to keep your mind off of your procedure.

Going to the dentist does not have to be an ordeal. Recognizing that different people have different needs, dentists will make efforts to cater to segments of the population. There are a lot of dentists like Stephen J Vanyo DMD PA out there, and the fact that dentists need to carve out a niche can work to your advantage. Think of what your or your children's needs are, and then look at the dentists in your area to see if there is one that will work for you. Finally, be open to the idea of taking your children to one dentist and going to a different dentist for yourself.
