How to Protect Your Teeth

3 Ways To Adjust To Invisalign Braces

If you are new to Invisalign braces, the adjustment period is probably making you question your decision. However, the adjustment period is relatively short and by wearing the braces as directed, you can have straight teeth soon. To help you get through the adjustment period as quickly and painlessly as possible, here are some tips to keep in mind.

Switch Trays at Night

The Invisalign braces are basically trays that help to align your teeth while wearing them. Your orthodontist will have you switch out the trays periodically as your teeth start to shift into place. When you switch to the new tray, you can sometimes experience discomfort.

Fortunately, as you wear the braces, the discomfort will fade. To avoid some of the discomfort though, try switching to the next tray at night before bedtime. You will sleep through most of the discomfort.

If you do opt to switch out your Invisalign braces during the day, take an over-the-counter pain reliever before doing so. The pain reliever will help with avoiding any discomfort altogether.

Get an Aligner Hook

Until you become familiar with removing your braces, it can be somewhat of a challenge. To make it easier, ask your orthodontist for an aligner hook. You can also purchase one from your local pharmacy. The hook is designed to lift the braces away from your teeth so that you can easily remove it.

If you do not have an aligner hook, you can also use a paper towel or surgical gloves to remove them. The towel and gloves help you to get a firmer grip on the braces so they are easier to remove.

Watch What You Eat

During the first few days, eating certain foods can further add to the discomfort you are feeling. To avoid this, stick to soft foods that are easy to eat, such as soup.

It is important to note that Invisalign braces can become stained when you eat and drink certain foods and beverages. You will have to live with the stains until it is time to switch to a new tray. Try to avoid foods and drinks that are usually associated with staining, such as red wine and tea, in the future.

Your orthodontist can help you find other ways to adjust to your new Invisalign braces. If you continue to experience discomfort with the braces, inform your orthodontist. He or she might need to make adjustments to the braces.
