How to Protect Your Teeth

3 Things To Know About Improving Your Smile With Tooth Bonding

If you are not happy with how your smile looks, one of your choices is tooth bonding. Tooth bonding is typically used to fix and repair teeth that are either damaged or discolored. This is not a solution for teeth that are misaligned in your mouth; it is more for teeth that are in the right place but have become damaged by other means.

#1 How Tooth Bonding Works

When you want to have tooth bonding applied to your teeth, you are going to have to consult with your dentist. Your dentist is going to need to determine if your teeth are good candidates for bonding. Ideally, your teeth will just have visual damage to them, such as a crack or chip, or discoloration, in order for tooth bonding to work. If you have teeth that are decaying or rotting, tooth binding will hide the decay or rot, but it will not treat or stop the rot. If you have decaying teeth, you need to consult with your dentist to see what other steps you need to take to improve your dental health before going through with tooth bonding.

Tooth bonding is made out of a composite resin, which is a type of plastic. The plastic is then colored so that it matches the color of your other, normal teeth. This will help it blend in with the rest of your teeth.

#2 Clean Your Teeth First

Second, you want to make sure that you clean your surrounding teeth before you get your tooth bonding applied to your teeth. If you are not happy with the color of your teeth, you should have your teeth bleached before you get the plastic resin made that will bond to your teeth. That way, the new plastic resin can be made to most accurately match the color that your teeth are right now.

#3 Be Careful About What You Eat

After you have composite teeth bonding performed on your mouth, you are going to want to be carefully about what you eat. Your composite bonding should last for a while; however, it will last longer if you watch what you eat. You should not eat hard foods, like ice and hard candies, that have the potential to crack the resin that makes up your tooth bonding. You need to be willing to give up hard candies and food if you want your resin to last.

Before you go through with tooth bonding, realize it is to fix imperfections, not decay, and that you want to make sure that your teeth are clean before the resin is made so that it will most closely match the color of your teeth.
